Callot is a deadly disease whose cause and cure are unknown, and it’s an illness veiled in mystery aside from it's brutal symptoms. Once infected, hideous bumps form all over the patient's body in the early stages, and soon their limbs harden like stone before the entire body crumbles to dust until they die.
Due to the grotesque nature of the disease's symptoms, rumors began to spread all over the kingdom that the victims were being punished for dealing with the devil. Thus, even powerful noble families were affected and stigmatized when their family members were rumored to be suffering from callot. And such suspicions endangered the entire family's survival and led to the loss of their influence[1].
